Dreamy Sunset

An absolutely stunning sunset on Monday night at Magen's Bay - could not ask for more fantastic colors.

Sailing

Went sailing yesterday to Buck Island - despite having light winds to contend with, it was a great day out on the water.

Bright Pool

Our pool is not actually this bright - but with a long enough exposure, it sure looks like it lights up the night sky.

Star Trails Over Tortola

Not the greatest quality night shot - but for my first real attempt, I'm pretty happy with it.  Definitely something I want to work on in the future.  This is a 15 minute exposure looking towards Tortola.

iPhone Sunset

The first iPhone shot on USVIDailyPhoto - taken while on a walk in Peterborg on the north side of the island.  The colors in the sky were fantastic, and all but disappeared about 2 minutes later.

Turquoise Hans Lollik

The beach on Hans Lollik is quite nice - but from this angle all you can see is the turquoise water extending out from the beach.

Jazz in the Park

ICMC hosted Jazz in the Park on Friday night.  The music was great and relaxing on a blanket in Roosevelt Park with some wine makes for a lovely evening.

Back on the Rock!

After a long absence, I am very happy to be back home.  This shot is obviously not from the Virgin Islands, but rather from a safari in Tanzania.  This was taken in Tarangire National Park - home to a lot of wildlife, especially elephants.  Prepare for regularly scheduled programming to resume.

Hiatus

I'll be traveling for the summer, so I won't be able to keep up with USVI Daily Photo for the next few months.  I'll leave you with a shot (taken by Mrs. USVI Daily Photo) of me at Maho Bay.

Carval Rock

Not the best picture of it, but the pockmarked island in the foreground is Carval Rock (just in front of the bird sanctuary of Congo Cay).  There are a number of different histories around this island, some claiming that the rock was mistaken for a ship and pummeled by cannon fire.

The one I believe is that in the days of cannon-laden vessels, you were not allowed to enter port with loaded guns.  The only way to unload the guns is by firing them, and so ships would use Carval Rock as a target to unload their cannon balls before coming into Charlotte Amalie.

My Boat

We sailed over to St John for the Easter Beer Hunt, and I finally took a picture of my boat in clear water.

Relaxed

The past week has been very calm out on the water, and these three ladies are enjoying those calm seas at Honeymoon Beach on St John.

Safety Stop

A typical view from a 3-minute safety stop on a recent dive.  There's not much to do but hang out at 15 feet and wait.  Sometimes you can see more the adventurous fish come up to say hello, but more often than not you just count down the seconds.  Boring, yes - but I think it's important to do a safety stop on every dive.

Easter Beer Hunt

The Easter Beer Hunt has been a family tradition for quite a long time.  It is exactly what it sounds like - instead of hiding eggs for kids to run around and find, we hide beer for adults to run around and find (with their 6-pack holders as easter egg baskets).  This year was the first ever USVI Easter Beer Hunt, and it was a great success.  We also learned a few things that will make next year even better.

Crank Shaft

Another shot from my dive of the Wreck of the Rhone, this time of the massive crank shaft from the boat.  The wreck really is impressive and a good spot for both snorkelers and scuba divers.

These two massive lobsters are hanging out under the Rhone, safe in the knowledge that they are protected by law from being harvested.  They do look pretty tasty however.

My Sails

I recently became the proud owner of a Kirby 25 sailboat.  It's a pretty fast little racing sailboat, but I haven't raced in her yet - still working up to that part.

Its hard to see from this far away, but I was trying to capture the little sailboat on the horizon, desperately trying to outrun the storm behind it.  (Clearly that just means I should buy a longer lens, right?)
