Caneel Bay

A shot overlooking Caneel Bay on St John from Sunday.  I haven't been down to Caneel Bay yet, possibly because Cinnamon is my favorite, and possibly because it's a $10 entry fee.  I'm sure I'll make my way there one day though.  In the meantime I'll just enjoy the view I can get from the road on my way around the island.

Late Nights

I've been catching myself the last few days around 11 pm and realizing that I haven't posted something on the blog for the day.  I'll try to get back on track with morning posts the rest of the week.

I went to St John on Sunday for a few hours - grabbed sandwiches at Deli Grotto and then headed to Cinnamon Bay to catch some sun and surf.  The water was beautiful and the clouds provided some nice cover from the hot sun every few minutes.  The huge yacht anchored in the bay certainly added a nice touch to the overall scenery.

Blue and Green

A big piece of coral reaching up to the surface of the water on a recent dive.

Close Call

Yikes, almost didn't make a post for today.  We were out all day on St John, so this is a shot on the car barge as we watched the Rolex Regatta pass by the boat.  I'm a big fan of the shamrock on the spinnaker.

Rolex Regatta

The shot was a bit far for the point and shoot that I had on me at the time, but this is one of the races of the Rolex Regatta, an annual international competition held on St Thomas for all different classes of sailboats.  The race is happening all weekend long, so check it out if you're on island.

Pondering

Captured on more rocky beach on the north side of St. Thomas (although the name of the beach escapes me now).

Splash

A quick attempt at a little photo montage.  The shots could definitely be a lot sharper, but I'm just glad I caught this pelican fishing at Hull Bay.  For a while it seemed like they were only fishing where I wasn't pointing my camera.

Underwater Paradise

A great expanse of coral loaded with fish (and a diver in the background) on a dive off of Buck Island.  This dive site was called Joe's Jam.

Mystery Island

Well, it's probably not too much of a mystery if I knew the islands a little bit better.  I believe that this is Great Hans Island, just off the north shore of St Thomas.  I took the picture from Peterborg, so the geography seems to line up correctly - I'll have to validate with someone who knows a bit better than I do.

Palms on Sandy Spit

With the exception of the water spots on the camera lens I really enjoyed this picture.  I really need to get better about wiping the water off the lens before taking a shot, but while boating (aka, drinking), that's much more difficult to remember than it should be.

Pelican

A pelican gliding over the water - on the east side of Magen's Bay, capturing during a hike in Peterborg.

Homer's Scuba Tours

Located in Hull Bay on the north side of the island, Homer's scuba shop is a great place for anyone interested in diving.  I went out with Homer on a shore dive and it was a super relaxed dive - nice and easy pace for everybody.  Apparently they have night snorkel trips that are supposed to be really fun.  I might have to check those out sometime.

Jost Van Dyke

I believe this shot is looking at the island of Jost Van Dyke, taken as we left Tortola on a lovely Sunday boating, but my memory might be completely wrong.

Rafted Together

When we went boating on Sunday there were too many people for just one boat (limit of 8), so we rented two boats and then rafted them together wherever we went.  This is taken in Smuggler's Cove in Tortola.

Sandy Spit

I am disappointed that I've missed a second day of posting already, but I hope that the excuse of "I was boating" will suffice for now.  We stopped off at multiple beaches and had a lot of fun - this one is Sandy Spit in the British Virgin Islands just off of Tortola.

A Bit of Rust

This Jeep looked like it hadn't moved in quite some time - just a little bit of rust around the edges.  Obviously it's an older car, but it just goes to show how quickly things rust in the salty air of the Virgin Islands.

Blue Water and Boats

A shot from the St. Thomas Yacht Club beach looking out at the plethora of boats moored in the bay.

Pelican

On a hike in Peterborg, captured a few images of the pelicans flying around and snagging fish from the water.  I like the simplicity of this shot.

Crash!

There's a fun hike out in Peterborg that brings you to this point on the north side.  The waves on this day were pretty rough and crashing water all over the place (reminds me of the blowhole in Hawaii).  On a calmer day you can sit in one of the pools formed in the rocks and have the waves spraying over top of you.

In Flight Again

Another bird in flight - this time from a hike in Peterborg.

In Flight

This bird was doing at least equally as well catching fish as the fishermen standing on the beach.  The wings were what struck me most - it looks almost like the body isn't attached to the wings properly.  Not sure what kind of bird this is, but it certainly had a great ability snagging fish right from the surface of the water.

Bait Fishing

These three gentlemen were casting a net out into Hull Bay to catch baitfish.  There was also quite a crowd of pelicans and other avian fishers doing their fair share of fishing out in the water while these guys picked the tiny fish out of their net.

Sea Turtle

On my dive last Saturday, we saw this huge sea turtle hanging out under a coral head.  One of my fellow divers was testing out his underwater camera as well and I caught this shot of the two of them.  The sea turtle looked a beaten up, its back right flipper was missing.  Not sure if it was a boat collision or another animal, but we let it head out on it's way.d

Tangled Up

Looks like a fun project to untangle this mess of ropes washing back and forth on the beach at Hull Bay. It looked like one of the ropes out of this jumble was actually connected to a boat out in the harbor, but who knows how it got like this.

Hull Bay

Went to Hull Bay this weekend (trying to discover beaches that I haven't been to before).  Hull Bay is a favorite spot for surfers, but there weren't any out there on this day (a bit rainy and overcast).  There's also a great sushi place and a fun bar right next to the beach.

Spotted Trunkfish

Captured this little guy on Sunday during the first dive of the morning.  One of my favorite looking fish - from head on it's shaped like a triangle.

Magen's From Above

There's a great lookout above Magen's Bay (on the way to Hull Bay) where I got this shot.  It's even better if there aren't any safari taxis and loads of tourists hanging around, but sadly that was not the case. I took the shot and they showed up right behind me to get in on this great scenic view.

Theme Day: Passageway

My first time participating in a City Daily Photo theme day!  This month's theme is "Passageways," so I picked a recent shot from Magen's Bay that shows the exit from the woods into the sandy beach.
